Belle Flaneur Window Dancing, photos by Suzanne Louise
Bathing in the amber glow of Robby Ingham’s Directions Store Double Bay is a delight. This happening, whether it be spiritual or otherwise, we invite you to bask in the light of these mesmerising photographs by Suzanne Louise. The making of this installation is the dream of movement, of living in the moment to progress forward & pursue one’s own personal creative journey of authenticity & if we are lucky enlightenment. It’s also about looking back appreciating where you came from, what you might consider to be the ‘junk’ in your life & repurposing it to mean more. The window installation is layered with objects that represent memories. Objects that were once discarded have been given new life in this collection of curiosities. We’ve drawn on the Steampunk philosophy to create this happening & have been inspired to take risks, bolstered by the optimism of human potential which is a defining characteristic of Steampunk.
Steampunk the perfect excuse to experiment, collaborate, create & re-use!
Dance me! enjoy the after glow.

A work of art this fantastic deserves a parade.
I am yet to see the night view of this artwork but Suzanne’s vivid images have inspired me to get down there tonight & take in the glow
…yes, the overall essence of Steampunk summed up poetically – the world has a right way to work, an innate intelligence, and a return to these ways will bring us back to a world that is a working machine again…rather than the mad panic of panelbeating we currently exist with…
The steam power Mise-en-scène, –
as captured by sensational Sydney fashion photographer Suzanne Louise, is a triumph.
All hail Nat Coulter the master behind this scintillating science fiction sub -genre + alternate history inspired installation. The competition had better take their Directions from this world class window in Double Bay.
Cass, your description of this happening steam power machine is so spot on. You have given Natalie’s vision, experiment & creation the appreciation it deserves
Your words have depicted the vibe of Suzanne Louise’s photography
That’s done it! these photographs have motivated me to get in the car, cross two bridges to bask in this golden glow of the Steampunk machine on location. Long may it reign! Will report back after live viewing.
I can not, and will not even try to come close to all beautiful words written about this fabulous journey,… it is pure poetry, and defines exactly how is is! The photo’s are amazing! see the difference when a talent hits that button, and captures the Beast! Amazing,.. can’t get any better… this is the icing on the cake! Suzanne rocks!
Suzanne you have captured the steampunk machine and the movement around it so well.. Your talent shines like the window itself!
it’s kinda old looking, i like the silver ball
beautiful shot details, that appears like moment suspended in a space-time continuum. After reading Caolan’s beautiful comment I thought WOW, this work really belongs to the world of magic if it can inspire such thoughts
Wow! The train certainly has left the station! What a beautiful record of a masterpiece celebrating the ART of collaboration in a commercial urban space where style meets creativity.
welcome back & long live the history of steam punk.
nat – you are incredible. not only can you create the magic we all see in the window, you involve so many talented people to help you create your masterpiece. how you manage to inspire others to channel their creativity and develop themselves indivdually whilst working as a team led by you amazes me every time.
you are a mentor that money can’t buy, flourish and embrace all…you really are AMAZING!
Definitely a stand out. The detailing is impeccable.
I love the photo of the silver ball with the reflections in it!
It captures another world! What an eye you have, Suzanne!
I actually can’t look away from these photo’s…the lighting, the angles! Each photo has a little surprise, something that i haven’t seen before, so much detail, so much to look at!
Suzanne you have tackled this beast front on, a job well done!
p.s I have a little confession… I made an orgasm sound when the last photo popped up, of the ball! WOW!
Beyond R’n'R Nat, another triumph.
To see it in the ‘flesh’ is yet another awakening. Go, have a look and marvel at the inspiration to put all these wonderful old objects together to create such harmony and interest.
pseudo-Victorian mechanical anachronistic technology – maybe. Force of nature – definitely
What a beautiful installation! The use of mixed-media and attention to detail make it truly wonderful. Well done Belle Flaneur!
This window is above & beyond, what a bunch of creative little bee’s! & how clear now is the meaning of ‘Steampunk’ by just looking at these pictures! Really really admire it. x
Great photographs Suzzanne! Totally agree Meike, makes such a difference when you have talent like that on board!
The window looks amazing at night, I recognise the cog wheels under the man style business shoes, transports me back to memories of the Downing Centre Displays. I love the industrial age aesthetic and the spirit of reviving the past. If only we could see more recycled sustainable windows around Sydney.
AMAZBALLS! WOW guys you did an amazing job. Drove past tonight to have a look and had another New York moment……….great to see something in Sydney that makes you stop, think and gives you inspiration! Nat you should pitch this to Bergdorfs!
I am heading down to have a look at this – a must see, judging from the images.
Exceptional work.
The dance goes on……..hope it never stops. Maybe the window is singing – “I Could Have Danced All Night”.
These night photographs look amazing ‘
Great job girls!
Why not consider submitting into VMSD windows competition later this year?
Marvelous what can be done with a pile of junk.
Kerry after reading your comment about the VMSD competition I immediately jumped on google to find out more.
What a great idea! All Belle Flaneur’s followers have agreed that this window has to ‘live on’. So why not enter this steam machine into a window competition!
Please feed us with more information about the competition Kerry, I’m sure I speak for everybody when I say ‘we’re interested!’
Hi Nat! We met today nr cooper park and found eagle kites together. Wow! Really impressed by steampunk concept. Using recycled items in art has got to b harder than people think. So kudos to u guys for not only committing to your theme but also for making it incredibly stylish! Definitely peaked my curiosity, can’t wait to see it in real life.
Im with Lara about the competition! re-use re-use re-use!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY NATALIE – THANK YOU FOR FOUNDING THE BELLE FLANEUR ARTIST COLLECTIVE. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY ADORED AND LOVED SO VERY MUCH X
which way does the wheel turn?… “directions” (nice play on words) i like the photo where it has a gauge- how much “steam/energy” is being produced… (however the display is not moving) so therefore, you’re saving energy. (clever – very much a statement)- from the materials you used, to the theme, to the demographic….. LOVE
…you wouldn’t credit that a number of my patients (who go to the nearby fitness studio) have commented on this window…and none of them now that I played a role (albeit small) in the creation of it…I love that BF transcends all society…
I just love this concept and it’s end visual product! So beautifully neo-romantic yet captures elements of technofantasy.
